Butaca - Easy Chair designed by Luis Barragán (1945)

This chair – found throughout all of Mexico – is known as “el butaque” or “la butaca” and is of Spanish origin. The design of this particular chair probably came about as the result of a collaboration of Luis Barragán with Clara Porset. The “Butaca”, a low chair with flowing line made of wood and wicker, is first documented in photographs depicting the interior of Barragán’s house in Mexico City. Versions of the chair can be found with bigger or smaller armrests, covers of different materials or with varying tilts to the backrest. Originally designed by Barragán in 1945; materials include Mexican oak and wicker.
